His skin his cold, she realizes through the haze of pain.

They fell to their knees a while ago, when the battle dimmed away and wayward covered all the corpses. She breathed in the ash like her last life line, willing it to burn her lungs into ash. Her arms wrapped around his shoulders and neck like she wanted to sink into his skin and warm him up.

Sakura’s knees stung against the rocky dirt, and her shoulders sank lower.

She felt him against her chest, thinner and frailer and fragile, easy to crush beneath her fingers if she held on too tightly.

But he was still as slippery as a ghost. She remembered when he’d left her on a bench, remembered not holding on as hard as she should have. Now she could anchor him right there in the middle of this bloodied battlefield to her soul, or turn him to dust.

His head sank onto her shoulder, sharp angles digging into her, and she felt like she was holding a skeleton.

“Can we,” he choked, throat raw and voice raspy, “start again?”

Her gloved fingers fisted into his hair. He sounded just as broken. “Yeah,” she murmured back, tightening her grip on him once more. “Let’s start over.”

All the feels.

At once.

Why.

It’s scary to find someone that makes you happy. You start giving them all of your attention...

It’s scary to find someone that makes you happy. You start giving them all of your attention because they’re what makes you forget everything bad that’s going on in your life. They’re the first person you want to talk to in the morning and the last one before you sleep just so you can start and end your day with a smile. It all sounds great to have that someone, but it’s scary to think about how easily they could just leave and take that happiness away too when they go.
